Liverpool’s number 9, Roberto Firmino, has been on a goal scoring draught for club as of late. However, Liverpool legend, John Barnes, says it should not exactly worry the club.
The Brazilian has scored just once in his last 14 club outings but John Barnes believes that Firmino plays a far more important role at Liverpool than scoring goals.
He did however, just score a brace in Brazil’s recent win over Bolivia.
Although he does occupy the central 9 role, it is not he who is relied upon to score the goals under Jurgen Klopp’s attacking system. Firmino is a target man who becomes the linking player between his two wingers. Perhaps the two most prolific wingers in all of Europe.
Roberto Firmino boasts a tidy touch and is at most times involved in the goals scored by both Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah for Liverpool. The three make up the deadliest attack in world football.
This has not been at the forefront of the Brazilians criticism however, and John Barnes believes that whether he is lacking goals or not, he remains an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans.
When questioned on Firmino’s lack of goals, Reds legend Barnes told BonusCodesBets:
“No is the answer. Firmino’s role is slightly different and it’s not necessarily about the netting the ball; in fact, he brings more to the team than just goals.”
“By having him supporting Salah and Mane in front of the net, and for those two to lead the goal scoring, has done the team a world of good, which became very clear last season.”
“This magical trio finished on a combined 57 goals and 38 assists, now that’s something to be proud of. Yes, its a slightly different set-up to many other teams but it works.”
Roberto Firmino is yet to open his goal-scoring account this Premier League season. This weekend may be a good time to change that fact when Liverpool face 1st placed Everton in this season’s opening Merseyside derby.
