Former Manchester United and England defender, Gary Neville, believes that Mikel Arteta has exceeded expectations since taking over at Arsenal.
The Spaniard was appointed as Arsenal boss in late 2019 after subpar results lead to the dismissal of Unai Emery. A manager who was given more than enough time to prove his worth after the departure of the great, yet in decline, Arsene Wenger.
With the club’s current state, Gary Neville heaped praise upon Mikel Arteta for his tenure so far in north London.
Before his arrival Arsenal had faced many issues both on and off the pitch. The club was struggling to compete with the top-8 English teams and was far from the side that the world knows and loves so well.
From Mesut Ozil’s lopsided wage to game-time ratio, the struggle to keep Aubameyang at ease, and the failure to renew the contracts of some bright young stars were only a handful of issues plaguing the Gunners at the time.
Aubameyang has now signed a new three-year deal, Ozil is reportedly back in the squad, and young players are now thriving at the Emirates. Arteta has steadied the direction of the club and Arsenal does look like a top contender once more.
The ex-midfielder began his managerial career as an assistant to the legendary Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. He took the experience gained under his compatriot over to a then 10th placed Arsenal and improved to 8th spot by seasons end.
In that period, Arsenal finished the season strong by winning the FA Cup final against Chelsea, after big wins to Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool, before winning the FA Community shield in a dominant final against Liverpool.
Thats two trophies in his first 6 months in charge.
Gary Neville is pleased with Arteta’s current work at the club and believes he is more than exceeding expectations.
“I think Mikel Arteta is punching above his weight.”
“He is going above and beyond the players he has. The shape and the organisation, things w have criticised Arsenal for in the past, is good.”
“They are not finishing in the top-4 like Arsene Wenger used to get criticised for bu the look like a team which is more cohesive. It has continued from the end of last season and he is doing a great job.”
“I just think Mikel Arteta would love that £150m that Frank Lampard has got this summer.”
Arsenal have kicked off the brand new league season in emphatic fashion with two wins from two outings.
The real test faces Arsenal in their next fixture against defending champions Liverpool.
